Satu, Dua, Tiga, Kotatinggiland! was produced for a drawing project, in a response to a trip to Kota Tinggi, a small town in the state of Johor of Malaysia, located around 42 kilometers north-east of Johor Bahru.
With “floating mushrooms” and “hot-drink balloons”, these images are inspired by recollections and observations made from this particular trip, intertwined with my colourful imagination in the creation of what looks like a dreamland.
Having lived in a fast paced urban environment and being sheltered for my entire life, travelling to an environment surrounded by nature is too good to be true, like a dream! I also realised that for most of us, we have grown accustomed to living in a man-made environment to the extent that when we see nature, we immediately relate it to artificial material that we often see, instead of the opposite whereby nature is recognized as similar to man-made objects, which I find is absurd .
I got the envelopes whilst exploring the night market when we were in the town of Kota Tinggi. I was attracted to the brown of the envelopes and had intended to make use of them for this project despite not knowing what to execute yet.
While I was engaged in brianstorming for ideas after we got back from the trip, I realised that we did not get anything significant that reminded us of Kota Tinggi because the resort did not have a gift shop.
Hence, I designed the envelopes with the intention of making them work as individual envelopes, and will join to form a bigger picture like puzzle pieces. These envelopes will then be given tourists who visit the Kota Tinggi Resort as keepsakes, together with their keys to the chalets in them.
The execution was also intended as an exercise to explore illustration with the combination of watercolours, pen and chinese ink. The composite is therefore an experimental piece.
